Transform Your Home with a Professionally Laid Block Paving Driveway

A new driveway changes the whole front of your house. It adds parking, kerb appeal and real value when you come to sell. But a driveway is only as good as what is underneath it. Most paving that sinks, ruts or grows weeds was laid on a thin, rushed base.

John’s Brickwork has laid block paving in Essex for over 20 years. We dig out properly, build a compacted sub-base and lay every block to fall, so rainwater runs away from your house. The result is a driveway that stays flat and looks good for decades.

Why Choose Block Paving for Your Essex Home?

  • Strong enough for cars: Correctly laid block paving spreads the weight of vehicles and takes daily use without cracking.
  • Easy to repair: If a block is stained or damaged, we can lift and replace just that area. You cannot do that with concrete or tarmac.
  • Adds value: A smart driveway is one of the first things buyers notice. It also adds off-road parking, which many Essex streets lack.
  • Endless designs: Choose from many colours, sizes, patterns and borders to suit a modern or period home.

What Type of Block Paving Is Right for You?

Concrete Block Paving

The most popular and affordable choice. It is hard-wearing and comes in a wide range of colours, from charcoal to brindle and red.

Clay Pavers

Clay keeps its colour for longer than concrete and suits older and period houses. It costs a little more but ages beautifully.

Tumbled and Tegula Blocks

These blocks have softened edges for a cobbled, aged look. They are a great match for cottages and traditional Essex homes.

Permeable Block Paving

Permeable blocks let rainwater drain through the joints into the ground. They help you meet planning rules for front gardens and reduce puddles and run-off.

Patterns and Borders

Herringbone is the strongest pattern for driveways because the blocks lock together under turning wheels. Basketweave and stretcher bond suit patios and paths. A contrasting border or kerb edge frames the design.

Is Your Old Driveway Sinking or Cracked?

Sunken areas, wobbly blocks, weeds and puddles all point to the same cause: a weak base or poor drainage. Cleaning will not fix them.

  • Driveway replacement: We remove the old surface, build a new MOT Type 1 sub-base and lay fresh block paving.
  • Relaying sunken areas: If only part of the drive has dropped, we can lift the blocks, rebuild the base and relay them.
  • Drainage fixes: We add channel drains or soakaways where water collects, especially near doors and garages.
  • Cleaning and resealing: If the paving is sound but dirty, our jet washing service can bring it back to life.

Do You Need Planning Permission for Block Paving?

In England, you usually do not need planning permission for a new front driveway if it is permeable or drains onto your own garden. Laying more than 5 square metres of non-permeable paving that drains onto the road normally does need permission. A new dropped kerb also needs approval from the council.

We design driveways to meet these rules and can advise on dropped kerb applications.

How We Lay a Block Paving Driveway, Step by Step

The parts you never see decide how long a driveway lasts. This is how we build every drive.

  • Mark out and set levels: We set the shape, the height and a fall so water drains away from your house.
  • Dig out: We remove the old surface and soil to the right depth for a driveway, and take all waste away.
  • Install edging: Kerbs and edge blocks are set in concrete. They stop the paving spreading over time.
  • Build the sub-base: We lay crushed stone (MOT Type 1) in layers and compact each one with a plate compactor.
  • Add drainage: Channel drains or soakaways go in where they are needed.
  • Lay the sand bed: A screeded layer of sharp sand gives the blocks a level bed.
  • Lay the blocks: We lay your chosen pattern and cut blocks neatly around edges and drains.
  • Compact and finish: We vibrate the blocks into place, brush in kiln-dried sand and clean the site.

Choosing Colours and Designs

The right design should suit your house, not fight it.

  • Match the brickwork: Warm brindles and reds suit red-brick homes. Charcoals and greys suit modern or rendered houses.
  • Use a border: A contrasting border frames the drive and makes it look finished.
  • Mix sizes: Mixed-size blocks give a natural, random look on larger drives.
  • Add features: Steps, low walls, planters and lighting tie the whole frontage together.

We bring samples to your home so you can see them against your brickwork in daylight.

Looking After Your Block Paving

Block paving needs very little care, but a few simple habits keep it looking new.

  • Brush the surface regularly to stop moss and dirt settling in.
  • Top up the joint sand if it drops.
  • Clean up oil and fuel spills quickly.
  • Book a deep clean and reseal every few years.

How Much Does Block Paving Cost in Essex?

Block paving is priced mainly by area in square metres. The final cost also depends on the block you choose, how much digging out is needed, drainage and edging.

As a guide, these are typical UK prices for block paving in 2026:

Job Typical price
Concrete block paving, supplied and laid £70–£120 per m²
Clay or premium blocks £90–£150 per m²
Permeable block paving £85–£140 per m²
Average driveway (about 40 m²) £4,000–£8,000
Patio (about 25 m²) £2,000–£3,800
Digging out and waste removal £15–£35 per m²

Frequently Asked Questions

A properly laid driveway can last 20 years or more. The sub-base and drainage matter more than the blocks themselves.
Most single driveways take 3 to 5 days. Larger drives or jobs with drainage work can take a week or more.
Weeds grow when the joints lose their sand. Topping up with kiln-dried sand and sealing the surface keeps weeds down.
We do not recommend it. Laying over old concrete can trap water and cause problems with levels. We remove it and build a proper base.
Block paving is easier to repair and offers more design choice. Tarmac is cheaper for large areas, and resin gives a smooth, seamless look. We can talk you through the options.
If you want to drive across a pavement to reach your driveway, you need a dropped kerb. This must be approved by your council. We can advise on the process.
Driveways need thicker blocks than patios, usually 50 mm or more, laid on a deeper sub-base. We specify the right block for cars.
Yes. As bricklayers, we can build garden walls, piers and steps and fit lighting as part of the same job.
